Laser Hair Removal: It's Not Just for Women

Laser Hair Removal: It's Not Just for Women

Anyone who has body hair they’re self-conscious about can benefit from laser hair removal. In fact, an increasing number of men are getting laser hair removal to more permanently remove unwanted body hair.

The areas men want to reduce body hair and reasons for doing so can differ from women’s requests, but no matter the gender, everyone has the same seamless experience and satisfying results at our practice.

Jean Welsh, MD, located at Primary & Alternative Medical Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, explains why men can benefit from laser hair removal and what they can expect.

Reasons for men to get laser hair removal

Just as women do, men often have areas of their bodies they want to eliminate or reduce body hair. Having higher levels of testosterone means men tend to grow more body hair than women, making it even more challenging to remove it.

Laser hair removal is a convenient and long-lasting way for men to gain the smoother appearance they desire on almost any body part. Common areas where men request laser hair removal include:

If you like having some hair in these areas, we can also partially reduce body hair and leave some to grow. Some men also like to partially reduce their facial hair, making a five o’clock shadow easier to manage.

Many of these areas are hard to shave, and waxing is much more painful than laser treatment, with results that don’t last as long.

With laser hair treatment, it takes just a handful of sessions to get significant results.

Preparing for laser hair removal

Our team starts with a consultation before scheduling your first appointment. This helps us determine the best treatment and which laser to use on your skin.

Six weeks before the first session, men getting laser hair removal need to stop waxing, plucking, or doing any other hair treatments that remove hair at the root. You can continue to shave the area.

Keep the area getting treatment out of the sun and away from tanning beds six weeks before and during treatment. The day before the laser session, shave or trim the area to prevent any long hair from burning from the laser.

Removing unwanted hair by laser

You get your unwanted hair removed at our comfortable office in Silver Spring, Maryland. We apply a numbing cream so you feel comfortable during the procedure. You might need to wear goggles, depending on the treatment location.

Once the treatment area is numb, we aim the laser at your target area. You might feel mild discomfort, such as a pinprick sensation, while the laser works. Laser hair removal is less painful than other hair removal treatments like waxing.

You can return to your routine right after laser hair removal. Your skin might initially be mildly irritated and red, which you can manage with over-the-counter medication and cold packs. You should continue to avoid the sun.

Your hair falls out over the next month. It can take several laser treatments to get maximum results. Men may need more sessions than women because they have more testosterone, leading to stronger hair growth.

Once you complete laser hair removal, results can last up to several years before you need touch-up treatments.
